This Kickstarter project is bring back the Apple Touch Bar -- but this time it works with a whole range of devices and is at least ten times more customisable.

Apple may have said goodbye to the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar last year, but a team of four engineers believes the concept deserves a second chance. They’ve created the Flexbar, which is essentially a standalone version of the MBP’s thin touchscreen display that can be used with multiple devices and platforms through a USB connection.

When Apple discontinued the 13-inch MacBook Pro, it marked the end of the line for the Touch Bar. Apple may never make the Touch Bar again, but fortunately, the folks at Eniac have taken on the task of creating a replacement that it calls the Flexbar. The company is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to complete the project.

Dubbed the “Flexbar,” it’s not specifically targeted at Mac users, although the inspiration from the Touch Bar is undeniable. As far as the creators are concerned, the Touch Bar failed because Apple didn’t fully commit to it. They hope to fix that with a standalone device that will do everything the Touch Bar did and much more.

So ENIAC has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for a Touch Bar-style gadget called the Flexbar. It’s a widescreen, high-resolution touchscreen controller for PC and Mac computers that you can position above the keyboard, off to the side, or any other place you’d like to see context-dependent shortcuts for apps running on your computer.
