The December Cold Moon is due to light up the night skies this week. It will appear largest at 4:01 a.m. ET on Sunday, December 15, and marks the final full moon of the year. The Cold Moon is the name traditionally given to the full moon that occurs in December by the Native American Mohawks, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.

The Cold Moon gets its name because December is the month when the weather typically turns cold, according to NASA. The Old Farmer's Almanac states that some Native Americans also called the Cold Moon the Long Night Moon.

We’ve had the northern lights, a solar eclipse, a partial lunar eclipse, and supermoons in August, September, October, and November.  Even though we see the moon almost every night, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t appreciate its appearance in the sky.
